Chapter 22

Dustin Sinclair pondered Tanqueray’s change of heart. When she called she sounded desperate. She sounded wanting and needing. He’d never heard her sound that way before. It was strange too, as when she left he felt as though she should not. He wanted her to stay. He wanted them both to stay. Not for sex but more because he needed to tell her the truth about things and he knew she was na need her man friend for support once she heard the truth, the truth about Javina Nation, her mother, and him.

He was going to tell her how Javina Nation had been his lover from the past. He was going to tell Tanqueray that her mother was the reason he could not make love to her—well not the way a man like Finest could. He was going to tell her the relationship he had to her sister Sinclair. Yes, he was going to tell her that he was Sinclair’s father. Sure it hadn’t been proven with DNA, but that was purely academic. He knew he was her father. He’d not even seen the girl but knew he had to be her father. “Her name is Sinclair for crying out loud,” he reasoned aloud while pacing his room wondering what was going on and why she wasn’t there.

What had gone wrong? He’d called Cecil to pick her up despite the fact that she had asked him not too. But after about twenty minutes, Cecil called back and said she had changed her mind about coming back to the house once he got there to pick her up. Cecil said that she had decided to go off with her boyfriend. But on the phone, Dustin could sense that Tanqueray wasn’t with Finest anymore. She hadn’t asked him to pick them both up, she had asked only for herself. She sounded as if she was alone. And what was that comment about being dumped off?

“Cecil,” he said over the intercom.

“Yes,” Cecil answered sounding tired.

“I’m sorry if you were resting. Were you resting?”

“Uh . . . no sir, just down here cleaning out the car.”

“So you say she just changed her mind?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Where was she when she did that? It didn’t sound like she was near home. Why did she say you dumped them off?”

“Don’t know, sir.”

“It’s just so peculiar. I’ve called her phone several times and it just goes to the machine,” he went on. “I’m puzzled. Was she upset when you dropped them off? Were she and Finest fighting?”

Cecil was silent.

“I can go get her, sir. I can go see if she’ll come this time.”

“Maybe I should ride along and. . .”

“No!” he snapped.

“No? Why?” Dustin asked.

Cecil hesitated.

He hesitated a little too long for Dustin’s taste.

“Sir, why are you bothering with her? I mean there are many other hookers out there you can have at the snap of your finger and . . .”

“She’s not a hooker!” Dustin blurted. “And why suddenly, is this any of your concern?”

Cecil again was silent.
