Chapter 22
Dustin Sinclair pondered Tanquerayâs change of heart. When she called she sounded desperate. She sounded wanting and needing. Heâd never heard her sound that way before. It was strange too, as when she left he felt as though she should not. He wanted her to stay. He wanted them both to stay. Not for sex but more because he needed to tell her the truth about things and he knew she was na need her man friend for support once she heard the truth, the truth about Javina Nation, her mother, and him.
He was going to tell her how Javina Nation had been his lover from the past. He was going to tell Tanqueray that her mother was the reason he could not make love to herâwell not the way a man like Finest could. He was going to tell her the relationship he had to her sister Sinclair. Yes, he was going to tell her that he was Sinclairâs father. Sure it hadnât been proven with DNA, but that was purely academic. He knew he was her father. Heâd not even seen the girl but knew he had to be her father. âHer name is Sinclair for crying out loud,â he reasoned aloud while pacing his room wondering what was going on and why she wasnât there.
What had gone wrong? Heâd called Cecil to pick her up despite the fact that she had asked him not too. But after about twenty minutes, Cecil called back and said she had changed her mind about coming back to the house once he got there to pick her up. Cecil said that she had decided to go off with her boyfriend. But on the phone, Dustin could sense that Tanqueray wasnât with Finest anymore. She hadnât asked him to pick them both up, she had asked only for herself. She sounded as if she was alone. And what was that comment about being dumped off?
âCecil,â he said over the intercom.
âYes,â Cecil answered sounding tired.
âIâm sorry if you were resting. Were you resting?â
âUh . . . no sir, just down here cleaning out the car.â
âSo you say she just changed her mind?â
âYes, sir.â
âWhere was she when she did that? It didnât sound like she was near home. Why did she say you dumped them off?â
âDonât know, sir.â
âItâs just so peculiar. Iâve called her phone several times and it just goes to the machine,â he went on. âIâm puzzled. Was she upset when you dropped them off? Were she and Finest fighting?â
Cecil was silent.
âI can go get her, sir. I can go see if sheâll come this time.â
âMaybe I should ride along and. . .â
âNo!â he snapped.
âNo? Why?â Dustin asked.
Cecil hesitated.
He hesitated a little too long for Dustinâs taste.
âSir, why are you bothering with her? I mean there are many other hookers out there you can have at the snap of your finger and . . .â
âSheâs not a hooker!â Dustin blurted. âAnd why suddenly, is this any of your concern?â
Cecil again was silent.
